Canvas Heart - Tutorial

One more post for today. I promised that I would do more tutorials, and here is one that I did for one of the retreat layouts. I think it works with the Tim Holtz distress paints really well and I just love the effect that came out.

Smiles, Giggles & Dreams
The background was created with the Crafter's Workshop Kaleidoscope template and Distress Paints.

Here's a close up of what I want to show you. The canvas heart.

Step by Step
1. Draw a large heart shape in pencil onto a piece of canvas. Mine measured approximately 5" wide.
2. Cut out your heart.
3. Using washi tape, tape up the edges of your canvas heart and seal it well.
4. Using a spritzer bottle of water, spritz the canvas until it is damp and absorbed. Blot off excess water.
5. Choose the Distress Paints you want to use.
6. Dab and rub the distress colours onto your canvas, in small segments.
7. Spritz the canvas with water and watch the colours blend and wick into each other.
8. Once you like how it looks, dry it with your heat gun.
9. This is what it looks like dry.
10. Peel off the washi tape and you're left with a raw border. You can fray the canvas a little to give it more texture.

As you see from my close up picture, I then used white distress paint and randomly inked through the Kaleidoscope template. I also used my sewing machine to roughly sew two colours around the border and finally stamped on mini letters to finish it off.

Here's something else I made for the layout. The pink rose is actually made from a piece of kitchen paper towel. It's basically a used paper towel, which I twisted and spiraled into a snail shell, before sticking on a button. The leaves were made from left over canvas. I stamped a swirl pattern with embossing ink on a patch of spare canvas, before heat embossing with clear embossing powder. I then dabbed on Shabby Shutters distress paint, before free-hand cutting out two leaf shapes. The stamped embossed areas create a resist effect.
Another close-up on the layout.

12/12/12

Hi all,

Last Wednesday was a once in a lifetime date. 12th December 2012 - 12/12/12.  Did you do anything special for this unique date?

A bunch of us got together on the 12th to do a 12/12/12 Christmas canvas. Each of us had twelve main elements to place on canvas. There were reindeer, ornaments and trees. I chose tin soldiers for mine. Angela Collingwood also chose soldiers and she backed them with guard houses. I decided to keep it simple and did glittery blue shaped tags on mine.

The canvas is very long at 100cm x 20cm. Perfect for that sliver of wall. Some of us did our canvases horizontally, while others did theirs vertically.
The canvases were mod-podged with Christmas papers and allowed to dry. After that, layers of acrylic paints in favoured colours. I kept mine pretty light so the bottom paper would still show through. I then added silver acrylic paint around the edges and dabbed on some pearl mica flakes. I also stenciled on silver glitter glue through a circle template.
The soldiers were die cut and pieced together after distressing with black soot. I die cut, embossed and painted the backing before covering them in blue glitter. I love how the embossing shows up in certain light under the glitter. The soldiers were then stuck on with hot glue and I added mini wreaths and die cut numbers to finish off.

Products Used
100cm x 20cm blank canvas
Papers from Making Memories (not sure which line)
Mod-Podge
Silver and green acrylic paints from Kaisercraft
Pearl mica flakes medium from Golden
Silver and blue fine glitter
Embossing folders by Sizzix
Chequered Dots Template from Dylusions Stencils for Ranger Inks
Cardstock from Bazzill and Core-dinations
Black Soot Distress ink from Tim Holtz forRanger

Hope you'll try something similar. It was a lot of fun. This will be used to count down the twelve days of Christmas and can be taken out every year to be used again and again.  In fact, why not do one of these for every occasion?

Thanks for dropping by,

Canvas Mixed Media Class II

Hi all, it's been a lazy week for my scrapbooking. I think I'm in holiday mood already. We'll be going to Bali and Singapore for ten days starting on Friday. Sun (not that we don't enough of it here as it is), beach, pool, coconuts... Oh, and in Singapore - I cannot go through Singapore without having my favourite chicken rice.  The holiday was booked more than a year ago and Miss C is so excited, she's already packed her baby pillow. That was funny, as she forgot and was looking for it last night before bed.

Anyway, I have half a layout sitting on my dining room table (which the cat has decided is its new sleeping spot) and I'm trying to get my behind back on that chair to finish it. Yes, I can.

In the meantime, I did my canvas mixed media class last night. What fun. I gave them a free for all - do whatever design you like. I wanted them to explore their creative side and not just copy what I had done. We got some pretty cool canvases. Each of them were unique and individual. The core lesson was the same though, teaching them to layer paper, using stencils, molding paste, stamping, rub-ons, markers and lots of paint. I think they were all quite pleased (and surprised) that they did have an artistic side to themselves and hopefully, that will give them the confidence to do work outside the box.

Here's my original canvas.

Putting down the base layer.
Lovely layers.
Adding their own designs.
Six completed canvases. Aren't they great?

Gel Medium Transfer Class

Hey there. I finally got to teach my mini album classes where I used gel medium over canvas to create these unique pages that look like they have been printed on. It's so lovely as you can see the canvas pop through and yet keep the image you want nice and clear. Everyone learnt how to use the gel medium as a transfer technique and also got to play with lots of flowers and trim.

I brushed on a layer of medium on the canvas before covering with paper, right side down. Let it dry completely and then, using water, soak the paper before rubbing it to reveal the underside, which has transferred to the canvas. Seal it with another layer of medium and you're good to go with the embellishments.
I added lots of flowers, bling, trim and doilies to my pages. The pictures were taken at Disneyland where Miss C got to dress up and get some pro pictures done. Look at her pose.

Here's Pam who's done with her cover.
Pam's cover. Isn't it gorgeous?
Angela, who is also one of our instructors at HKMC layering on her embellishments.
Another cover from my first class. I love the way she's cut around her photos before sticking them down.
I have one more of these classes on 19th June from 7:30 to 9:30pm so if you'd like to join, please email info@hkmemorychestonline.com to book.

Canvas Mini Album Class

I thought I'd give a sneak peek into a canvas album I'll be teaching in June at HKMC. This month, I taught a canvas mixed media class on how you could use gel mediums.

For this mini album, I will again be using gel mediums to teach a transfer technique. The album I've done uses a mixture of Pink Paislee papers and Prima flowers, however, since I used papers from my kit club, I may need to change them for papers stocked by HKMC for the classes.

Lots and lots of Prima flowers make me happy.
Pretty trim to frame your pictures.
A closer look at the transfer onto canvas.
This class will be held at HK Memory Chest in Sheung Wan on 6th (Wed) and 19th (Tue) June from 7:30pm - 9:30pm. Sign up early as I will only be able to have 6-8 students per class.

Products Used (will be different from class kit)
Canvas mini album from Maya Road
Papers from Pink Paislee's Sweetness 2010 Collection (discontinued)
Flowers various from Prima Marketing
Jewelled swirl bling from Zva Creatives
Ribbons, trims and doilies sourced locally

On the same note, for my May class, I will be teaching the Authentique treasure box class on 15th and 22nd May, again from 7:30pm - 9:30pm so don't forget to sign up for this one too.

Canvas Mixed Media Class

Hi all. Two weeks off from scrapbooking/crafting while Miss C was on holiday, but now she's back in school (since Monday) and it's back to classes for me too, although I'm on the other side of the table, teaching the classes instead.

On Tuesday, I got to teach my mixed media canvas class. I'm not going to go through too much details on the blog as it would be unfair to those who actually took the classes, but this canvas incorporates the use of gel mediums, gesso and acrylic paints as well as scrapbooking papers, embossing powders and lots of trinkets.

My original canvas
Layering of mediums, trinkets, paints and stamping.
Cluster of different elements to give the canvas texture and dimension.
The class (along with my other classes), are taught at the HKMC shop in Sheung Wan. For this particular session, I had seven students all eager to learn some new techniques.

Oh good. Smiles and laughter means happy students, I hope.
